Electro Magnet

Concept Explanation

Electro Magnet

An electromagnet is a solenoid coil that gets magnetised i.e. becomes a magnet due to flow of current. It is magnet made by using electric current. An electromagnet works on the principle of magnetic effect of the current.  It consists of a long insulated copper wire wound around a soft iron core. If the current passing through the coil is switched off then the  iron piece will lose its magnetic effect, i.e., it will stop behaving like a magnet such magnet are called temporary magnets because they behave as a magnet as long as electricity flows through them.

There are two factors through which an electromagnet can be made stronger, i.e.

1. By increasing the amount of current  used in the coil.

2. By increasing the number of turns forming the coil.

Advantages of Electromagnet over Permanent Magnet  :

An electromagnet is a temporary form of magnet because its magnetism is only for the duration of current flowing in its coil. There are some of the advantages of the electromagnet over the permanent magnets which are stated below:

1. The magnetism of an electromagnet can be switched ON or switched OFF as desired. While it is not possible with the permanent magnet.

2. By increasing the number of turns in the coil and by increasing the current passing through the coil an electromagnet can be made very strong.
